Steal My Idea – Patient Intake Forms

A couple of weeks ago I attended the Human API Hackathon. As a person generally interested in Health I showed up to see what people are doing with Health technology and also to connect with folks from Human API, Rock Health and other innovators.

After looking for a team to join to help “hack” I thought to myself what is the one thing in our Healthcare system that is absolutely ready for disruption? That’s when it occurred to me that the most annoying part of healthcare for me is the patient intake process.  Those forms that you have to fill out over and over again with the same information for every new doctor you visit.  Every time I see a specialist I think to myself – can’t someone just automate this process?

I decided to connect the data that Human API exposes such as Weight, Height, FitBit information and other data sources to the DocuSign REST API to create a seamless process where most of the form is prefilled for you.

Human API guys did a great job creating a sample in my new favorite toolkit – Node.js which got me started very quickly.  You can get it here: https://github.com/HumanAPI/humanapi-example-app-nodejs

I then went to DocuSign DevCenter (www.docusign.com/devcenter) and grabbed the embedded signing code snippet:

The last part of the process was to create a patient intake form as a template in DocuSign.  You can get a developer perspective on DocuSign templates here: http://www.docusign.com/developer-center/explore/features/templates

After that I wrote some glue code, made sure that it all worked with OAuth, Express framework and deployed it to Amazon Beanstalk.

You can see my video submission for the Hackathon here:

The verdict is that I got this whole thing going in less than 24 hours (starting from scratch).  If you are an IT Developer for a Healthcare Provider you don’t need to wait until new legislature or major breakthroughs to provide your patient with a great experience.  The technology to create a seamless Patient Intake form exists today!

So please, STEAL MY IDEA!  Because I don’t want to fill out 7 pages of paperwork with the same information over and over again next time I go see a doctor!
